Preventing Cold Stress at Work: Winter Readiness Checklist | LP Insurance

When temperatures drop, the right plan protects your people and keeps projects moving. As guardians of our clients’ teams, we’ve put together a practical checklist you can use today to prevent cold stress on the job.
What is cold stress? Cold stress occurs when the body can’t maintain its normal temperature. Early signs include shivering, numb fingers or toes, and fatigue. Severe outcomes can include frostbite and hypothermia. Supervisors should stop work and respond immediately at the first warning signs.
Layer up for protection
- Encourage moisture‑wicking base layers, insulating mid‑layers, and wind/water‑resistant outerwear.
- Replace wet gloves or socks immediately to prevent heat loss.
- Ensure proper fit for PPE over winter layers.
Warm‑up breaks and hydration
- Schedule frequent warm‑up breaks and provide heated shelters (target 60°F or warmer).
- Offer warm, non‑caffeinated beverages; avoid caffeine, which can contribute to dehydration.
- Stop work immediately if shivering, numbness, or unusual fatigue appears.
Train, monitor, and respond early
- Review cold stress signs in tailgate talks before each shift.
- Use a buddy system, especially for isolated or extreme cold work.
- Encourage early reporting of symptoms; never dismiss “just cold” complaints.
